Uses of Hydrogen Peroxide






Hydrogen peroxide is a liquid that has composition of two oxygen and two hydrogen atoms.  The oxidizing properties of hydrogen peroxide are increased due to the presence of extra oxygen atom. The potency of food grade hydrogen peroxide is up to 35% and this is the reason it needs to be diluted before use. Hydrogen peroxide is normally used in treatment of small cuts on a regular basis in several homes, but there are many more food grade hydrogen peroxide uses which will be discussed in this article.

Uses of Hydrogen Peroxide

Cleaning and Disinfecting

  • Food grade hydrogen peroxide can be used as a cleansing agent due to its oxidation properties. Hydrogen peroxide is very useful in breaking down the stains in clothes; it is especially good in breaking down organic stains like of grass and blood. This is why it’s better to use hydrogen peroxide before washing stained clothes as it dissolves the stains very fast.

  • Hydrogen peroxide which is food grade is also highly effective in killing fungus and bacteria. When used in bathroom and kitchen surfaces it can help in killing several bacteria that are harmful for health like viral agents, E. coli, mildew and mold spores. A 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution can also be used for this purpose.

  • Use of hydrogen peroxide as an alternate to chlorine bleach is also advisable, which makes it suitable to be added to dishwashers and hot tubs.

Personal Hygiene

  • Hydrogen peroxide has properties which help in the killing of halitosis, which is a bacteria that is responsible or bad breath. That’s why food grade hydrogen peroxide uses includes its use as a mouthwash.

  • When food grade hydrogen peroxide is mixed with baking soda and salt, it can be used as a paste to clean your teeth. This helps in teeth-whitening and also checks bad odor from your mouth.

  • Mixing hydrogen peroxide in warm water and then soaking your feet in it will help in softening of the skin in your feet. It also helps in healing of minor cuts, abrasions and corns.

  • Using the mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide for soaking your tooth brush, when you are not using it, prevent it from bacterial infection and keep it sterilized.

  • Diluted solution of hydrogen peroxide can also be used on hair to make then shiny and thick.

Medical Uses

  • The most common and old use of hydrogen peroxide is in treatment of minor wounds and scratches on the body. But there are doctors to discourage this use as it is believed that the use of hydrogen peroxide in the area of wounds degrades the tissues of surrounding area.

  • But there are other uses of hydrogen peroxide also, which includes its use in ear wax removal and clearing the obstructions in the ear.

  • It is also believed that using food grade hydrogen peroxide can aid in control of cancer. Because it is tough for cancer cells to multiply in the environment of high oxygen, it believed that hydrogen peroxide can help as it improves oxygen levels in the body cells.
